A tremendous amount of applause should be given to the two Tribunal members who walked out of Monday night’s Senate meeting. It took a great amount of principle and character – something I have yet to see from either the current E-board or its spinoff slate. Such a demonstration should gave served to remind the current Senate and E-board that their purpose is to work as a cooperative unit in the interest of the student body as a whole. To read the comments from senators and Ethan Clay, calling the protest ridiculous, was very disheartening and tells me that they don’t understand how serious the walkout was in protesting their actions. The current E-board and Senate, as well as the newly-elected True 2, have a historical problem of thinking and acting too much like politicians and too little like students. I mean, seriously Ethan – “the Hope Amendment”? What a load of PR crap. And their arrogant assumption that they, the undergraduate STUDENT government, do not have to listen to the STUDENT ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR is appalling. I have yet to see one shred of real important accomplishment by this Student Union – I’m sorry, but GLBT rights and a rape crisis center are far more important to me than whether or not I can sign my boyfriend in in the grand scheme of things). Further, in my personal opinion, True 2 ran way too far with the Greek life argument, possibly in an effort to overshadow the fact that they didn’t believe in either of these causes, and it is unfortunate that the issue ended up carrying them to victory. The new slate will certainly end up as its predecessor has: working in the interest of the few, namely themselves.
