The Boston University Softball team continued its climb toward the .500 mark yesterday with a doubleheader sweep of the University of Hartford at Al-Marzook Field.
While the Terriers (14-16, 5-1 America East) banged out a season-high 14 hits in a 6-5 game one win, their pitching was the difference in game two, as freshmen Erin McDonald and senior Tiffany Finateri held Hartford to one hit in a 6-0 BU victory.
In the first game of the twin bill, BU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning behind RBI singles from Finateri and sophomore designated player DeKenya Williams, who continued her recent stellar play with a two-hit performance in the game.
Freshman third baseman Josey Mendez, who recently claimed America East Rookie of the Week honors, added a two-run homer in the third to extend the Terrier lead to four. McDonald posted another run in the fifth inning with another RBI single.
The Hawks (1-14, 0-5), who recorded seven hits in the game, scored two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single from third baseman Liz Borawski. Borawski put even more pressure on the Terriers in the seventh inning after smashing a three-run homer to cut the BU lead to one. Sophomore pitcher Julie Henneke, who also earned the America East Player of the Week award for her performance against the University of Maine last week, extinguished any hopes of a comeback by inducing a fly out to right field from the game’s final batter.
In her complete-game victory, Henneke allowed seven hits and five earned runs while walking two and striking out eight. She improved her personal record to 6-5 with the win. Caitlin Eichler pitched the entire game for the Hawks and dropped her record to 0-8.
Junior outfielder Abbey Pauley and senior second baseman Kristen Knesek each chipped in with two hits, while sophomore shortstop Jamie Haas contributed with an RBI of her own. The three players each recorded at least one steal as well, with Pauley swiping two in the game.
While the Terriers tallied six runs again in game two, Hartford couldn’t muster a single score with McDonald and Finateri in the pitching circle. The two pitchers, who also combined to no-hit Central Connecticut State University earlier in the season, let up a combined four walks and struck out seven in the shutout. McDonald, who gave up the Hawks’ only hit, claimed the win with four innings of work.
BU started the offensive onslaught in the second inning when Knesek scored on an error. The third frame included a triple from Pauley, an RBI single from McDonald and a Knesek RBI double to stretch the Terriers’ lead to 4-0. Pauley struck again in the fifth with an RBI single to left, plating Williams to cap the scoring.
All six of BU’s hits came from the bats of Knesek (2-3, 2 RBIs), Pauley (2-3, 1 run), and McDonald (2-3, 1 RBI). Thanks in part to three Hartford errors, Williams was able to score two runs as well.
The Terriers left nine on base in the game while Hartford stranded six. Jamie Graves took the loss for the home team, allowing three earned runs and seven walks in seven innings. She also struck out eight.
If the weather holds, BU will play host to the University of Connecticut Wednesday. The game is slated for 4 p.m. at Ashford Street.
