College of Fine Arts professor John Daverio’s body was found just a short walk from the building he had called a second home for more than three decades.
But since Daverio was declared missing, the distance between CFA and the bank of the Charles River, where he was pulled out of the water Monday night, has been more than just a half-mile. For law enforcement officials attempting to piece together the last minutes of the popular BU Musicology professor’s life, Daverio’s final walk has led to a whole month of uncertainty.
Concerned community members and police officials have left all options open, and have few leads, they said yesterday. They have been forced to consider everything from accidental slip to intentional jump but have been left with no answers to their questions.
And people’s memories of Daverio’s final days have been of little help. Family members and neighbors say nothing seemed wrong in the days leading up to his disappearance.
Daverio’s parents last saw him during a trip to their home in Sharon, Penn., which spanned the five days before he disappeared.
During his visit, there was no indication of anything wrong, John D. Daverio, the CFA professor’s father, said yesterday.
‘He was just same old John to us,’ he said.
Daverio had been concerned about his mother’s health, which had deteriorated over the weeks before his visit.
‘He came home because his mother was in the hospital,’ John D. Daverio said. ‘He came home to visit her.’
According to his father, Daverio told his parents during the trip he would try to return home in mid-April to check on her health again.
‘He said ‘Don’t you and Mom worry about anything. You took care of me and now it’s my turn I’ll take care of you,” the father said.
Meanwhile, back at Daverio’s Boston home, neighbors and others close to him in his Allston condominium complex said they were equally mystified by his disappearance.
Whitney Place property manager Aliona Manwelyan, who worked with Daverio on the complex’s Board of Trustees, said though she had her last personal contact with Daverio at the board’s meeting in January, she had heard from him over e-mail since then and not noticed anything wrong.
Daverio e-mailed her on the night of March 16, just hours before he disappeared, responding to a question about the sale of a condominium in the complex, she said.
‘I found it very normal in that e-mail,’ Manwelyan said.
But the next day, Manwelyan said a neighbor of Daverio’s called her to report that one of Daverio’s friends was concerned about him. The colleague was disturbed that Daverio, a man who rarely missed an appointment, missed an entire day of classes unannounced, the neighbor said.
‘His friend came to the building because John hadn’t shown up at work, and he came here and started buzzing,’ Daverio’s neighbor said. ‘He and I went up and noticed John’s apartment was unlocked.’
Daverio’s colleague made the first concerned call to police after finding no evidence of his whereabouts, the neighbor said.
Yet, despite others’ concerns, Manwelyan maintained that Daverio was alive and well.
‘I said ‘Don’t worry he just wrote to me and he’s fine,” she said.
Even as police began to release more and more disturbing details of the case, like the fact that the door to his apartment had been left unlocked, Manwelyan said she thought little of it.
‘Sometimes he was forgetful,’ Manwelyan said. ‘It happened before that he’d forget to lock the door. Sometimes I would have to go and lock it for him, so I didn’t really worry until two or three days afterward.’
But as worries began to spread and calls began to come in at a higher frequency, Manwelyan said she began to worry. When searches of his office revealed Daverio left his keys, wallet and briefcase there, she started to see things differently.
‘Up until then, I was sure nothing happened to him,’ Manwelyan said.
After a month of what his father called a ‘devastating’ waiting period, officials in the state Medical Examiner’s Office yesterday confirmed Daverio’s death.
Police said yesterday they are not optimistic they will ever get to the bottom of what caused Daverio’s disappearance.
If they cannot, family members and friends may be left wondering how that familiar half-mile turned into their seemingly untroubled loved one’s mysterious final journey.
