“[I’m] confused. [I’m] actually pretty happy right now. So that’s an odd place to be when you play angry rock music,” said From Autumn to Ashes bassist Josh Newton in a phone interview with The Muse. The Massachusetts native said to expect a loud rock performance if you attend the band’s show at Axis on Wednesday the 25th. FATA will be playing songs off all its albums in addition to brand new tracks off the newly released Holding a Wolf by the Ears.
Muse: What is the significance behind Holding a Wolf by the Ears?
Newton: Originally, it’s what Ben Franklin said about slavery when it was about to be abolished and he said it had gone on too long. Actually it wasn’t Ben Franklin, I forget who it was. Basically, if you are holding a wolf by the ears, there is no way to get out of a situation without getting hurt. For us, it pretty much means that for any situation you tend to be involved in there is no easy way out of it, and it ended up being the truth about this record.
Muse: For someone who can only spend 99 cents on iTunes, what song would you tell them to buy off the new album?
Newton: I would say “Pioneers” maybe. I think that it kind of sums up the whole album. Either that or “Deth Kult Social Club” . . . I think those two are pretty indicative of where we are going and what we are doing.
Muse: How do you feel about the music scene these days?
Newton: I don’t really feel about the scene. I don’t think we really have much to do with it. We don’t really fit in anywhere. We are not a super hardcore band, not a straight metal band, not one of those wimpy emo bands.
Muse: What is the craziest story you have from the road?
Newton: We met Mike Tyson the other day. He didn’t bite anybody.
FATA is currently on tour with Haste the Day, The Sleeping, The Sons of Disaster, 12 Gauge Valentine, Maylene and Alesana.
