Deon Provost will be the Student Union’s new president after winning Union elections in a landslide, Student Union Elections Commission officials announced today during a ceremony in the George Sherman Union.
Provost, a current Union senator for Myles Standish Hall took 1,316 votes, nearly 50 percent of the 2,635 who cast ballots online this week, beating out four other candidates for the position. Second-place candidate Mike Myers brought in 505 votes, or 19 percent of the vote.
“I’m in a state of awe and shock,” Provost said. “Next year is going to be really great. We’re going to get a lot accomplished.”
Provost said he will focus on trying to combine social and academic life at the Boston University, which are currently separate from one another.
Jon Marker won the vice presidential election, while Matt Bennett and Marc Weber won the secretary and treasurer positions, respectively.
Marker, a current senator representing Warren Towers, beat out five other candidates with a total of 737 votes.
“This is wonderful,” Marker said. “I can’t wait to get started. Right now I am in disbelief — this is amazing.”
Bennett was elected secretary with a total of 1,088 votes and 1,372 students cast ballots for Weber.
A total of 2,635 students participated in this year’s election, up from last year’s total of 2,585 voters. The number represents 17.9 percent of the total number of eligible undergraduate voters.
“University information systems compiled the vote and two separate people did a blind vote to confirm the results,” Student Activities Office Director Carolyn Norris said. “So they are definitely accurate.”
