The Boston University Athletic Association held a banquet at Metcalf Hall last night to honor graduating seniors and the past year’s best athletes. Representatives from each varsity team attended the event, which recognized academic and athletic achievements.
The annual event recognizes individual athletes for Most Valuable Player honors and highest academic achievement within each team. Individual awards are also given out to male and female Athletes of the Year, male and female Student Athletes of the Year, and male and female Spirits of the Year.
‘You are a part of a legacy,’ emphasized John B. Simpson, whose name is given to the most spirited male and female awards.
‘This was a good year in so many ways,’ said BU athletic director and master of ceremonies for the evening, Gary Strickler.
Senior Freddy Meyer was awarded Male Athlete of the Year for his place as captain of the ice hockey team, which won the Beanpot tournament and was runner-up in the Hockey East Tournament.
‘With Freddy being a First Team All-American and First Team All-Hockey East and more than anything else being a great leader for us, I was really happy to see him receive this award,’ said BU hockey coach Jack Parker.
Junior Katie Terhune took home Female Athlete of the Year honors for her role on the women’s basketball team. Terhune, who led the Terriers in points, was named to the America East All-Conference First Team. She also led the Terriers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
‘It’s a great honor.’ Terhune said. ‘I know a lot of great players have gotten this award in the past and having such a great season caps it all off for me.’
Senior Liam Revell of the men’s track team and senior second baseman Kristin Knesek of the softball team won Student Athlete of the Year honors. Each was honored for their academic achievement as well as their contributions to their respective teams. After sweeping a doubleheader at Binghamton University, Knesek returned with her team only minutes before receiving her award.
Senior Luke Huisenga of the men’s crew team and senior Susan Harrington of the field hockey team were awarded spirit awards for dedication and achievement.
The tone of the evening was sentimental, with many speakers reminding the seniors to always remember their past with the Boston University athletic department.
‘This will always be your home,’ said BU provost Dennis Berkey.
