The Silversun Pickups are like the new cool kids in the neighborhood that everyone is nervous about meeting. Carnavas, their full-length album debut, is a fantastic showcase of everything the Silversun Pickups are, and a teasing view into what they could be. The moody music, established by bassist Nikki Monninger’s brooding bass grooves, sounds new but feels familiar, and is taken up a level by the exquisite keyboard and articulate percussion that float in and out of the tracks, courtesy of keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Christopher Guanlao. However, guitarist/singer Brian Auberts’ earnest riffs and intense voice makes this a bona-fide rock album is guitarist/singer Brian Auberts’ earnest riffs and intense voice. Listen to this one twice. Grade: A
