The Boston University women’s soccer team will look to return to its winning ways tonight when it hosts the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the Terriers’ home opener.
Tonight’s game comes on the heels of a frantic beginning of the season for BU (1-3-1, 0-0-0 America East), which included trips to Colorado and Virginia two weekends in a row.
Massachusetts (2-1-1, 1-0-0 Atlantic 10) is coming off a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to national power Syracuse University this past Sunday. Before that, the Minutewomen tied the University of New Hampshire, 1-1, and had two consecutive victories against the University of Rhode Island and Quinnipiac University, 4-1 and 2-1, respectively.
Sophomore forward Adair Blyler leads Massachusetts on offense with three goals so far this season. Sophomore midfielder Lindsey Bellini is another threat to score she has tallied two goals and an assist. Senior goalkeeper Kelly Nigh has been stellar in net, allowing an average of 0.95 goals per game.
BU looks to avenge Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the University of Delaware in the finale of the George Mason/Kappa Invitational Tournament. The Terriers grabbed the lead just 1:16 into regulation but could not hold off the Blue Hens, who tied the game and then went ahead all in the first half. BU beat the tournament’s host team, 1-0, on Friday on a goal from junior Lauren Ciccone to advance to the finale.
The Terriers started the season with road defeats to Boston College, 3-1, and Colorado College, 2-1, in two overtimes, before mustering a 1-1 tie with Loyola-Marymount University in the Colorado College Tournament on Sept. 7.
Sophomore forward Melissa Shulman has been BU’s sparkplug, with five points on the season. She is the only Terrier to have more than one goal. Her 14 shots on net also lead the team. Ciccone, senior midfielder Rebecca Beyer, sophomore back Susan Marschall and sophomore midfielder Brooke Bingham have the other scores for BU. Senior goalkeeper Jessica Clinton has also been solid, making 27 saves in 485 minutes this season.
After tonight’s contest, BU stays at home for a game against Fairfield University on Saturday, before taking to the road again to take on the University of Rhode Island. The first America East conference game of the season follows that and is also the first ever meeting between the Terriers and conference newcomer the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. That game is set for Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m.
