Students helped launch BU Central, the former George Sherman Union Games Room, Thursday night with Rock ‘n Roll Sushi, a sushi and karaoke event sponsored by the Programming Council.
Students came early for the Japanese cuisine, forming a long line in the GSU basement and finishing off the sushi about 20 minutes after the event began.
Jeff Murphy, Student Activities Office assistant director, said that many students attended a similar event held in the fall of 2003 and a large turnout was expected for the event.
But College of Arts and Sciences junior Dennis Reardon said he was surprised by the lack of supplies and disappointed with the small amounts of food.
“I came for sushi, but there was a lack of sushi,” Reardon said.
After the sushi ran out, many students stayed for karaoke and cheered while 1980s tunes such as “Material Girl” and “YMCA” were sung enthusiastically by participants at the event.
Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences freshman Jamie Phelps said the tone of the evening, as well as the T-shirt that each singer received for their performance, was what drew her and her friends to the event.
“We came for the Asian food, and the fun atmosphere,” she said. “The free T-shirt is an added bonus.”
Erin Dayharsh, SAO program coordinator, said the event was largely a success due to the number of students who attended. SAO hopes to see even more students attend these events later in the semester, she said.
About 150 students attended Thursday’s event.
Murphy said event planning for the semester is ongoing.
“The Programming Council is working hard to develop a series of fun events for students every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night for the whole semester,” he said.
