I will not lie, one of the reasons I applied to Boston University was because I heard there was a lazy river. Don’t get me wrong I also heard that the academics, extracurriculars and food were all sensational as well. But when I hear the words “lazy river,” there is a certain level of attraction that instantly pulls me in.
I did my research and immediately went to the BU website to see if this rumor was true. What it showed me was that there was, to an extent, a “lazy river.” I also stumbled upon broomball, which intrigued me just as much.
Shortly after I found the lazy river on the site, one of my friends showed me the link and was also in complete disbelief.
To make a long story short, I got into BU and decided to attend, basing a large part of my decision on The Fitness and Recreation center and the lazy river.
I arrived here in September and was very impressed with the food, the extracurriculars, the parties and the academics (I suppose).
Like most freshmen, I was in awe when I explored FitRec for the first time. I hadn’t ever seen anything like it. It was magnificent.
I ventured throughout the beast, but I was not able to find the one thing that I was interested in seeing: the lazy river.
While I was in line for food the next day I began discussing this “lazy river” with my roommate. I informed him about how I based a large part of my decision to attend BU on the fact that the school supposedly had a lazy river. I told him how I could not find it when I ventured into the belly of FitRec. Just as I said this, the person ahead of me turned around.
He said, “You know what I heard. I heard that there is no lazy river, and that this lazy river is just a myth that BU uses to entice students to come.”
No way had I been played by such an egotistical, backstabbing, surreal lie! If it was true, that there was no lazy river, I vowed to myself that I would transfer to Boston College just to spite BU.
My roommate, my neighbor and I made it our duty to find this lazy river. To prove to us, and to everyone else on our floor that wanted to know, whether or not this lazy river actually existed.
We didn’t want to ask anyone where the lazy river was; it would clearly look like we were just the freshmen looking for the “myth.”
I examined every square inch of FitRec: upstairs, downstairs, from one side to the other, but we could not find it.
The three of us had one more hallway to go. It wrapped around the pool and into the men’s locker room. We ventured forth and emerged in a very different looking hallway that was alongside the pool.
We opened the side doors and were greeted by a smaller pool with basketball hoops. Not only were there basketball hoops, but also there was a giant hot tub. I am telling you, one could easily throw an amazing hot tub party with up to 75 people fitting in that thing. There are so many great hot tub deals around at the moment, like these models at Allspa in Surrey click here.
I was in shock from the size of the hot tub, but there it was: the lazy river. It looped around the hot tub and alongside itself. And there of course was someone rehabilitating in it, using it properly.
We immediately took the ramp that led into the pool and planned on making our way to the lazy river as soon as we could. Unfortunately, the lifeguard informed us that in order to go into the pool or lazy river we needed swim caps. Swim caps? I have never once worn a swim cap, but I would start if I could get into a lazy river.
The three of us rushed to the pro shop and bought our latex caps for $2 each. I got purple, my roommate got red and our buddy got baby blue. We sprinted back to the lazy river and got right into the swing of things.
I went for a ride, literally. After making one lap I grabbed a tube and just floated along. We went around a couple times in the intertubes and then started walking against the current. This is a challenge, especially swimming against it, since I am a very poor swimmer and only specialize in doggy paddle.
We returned to our tubes and made a couple more laps. That lazy river is an excellent place to reminisce, talk and just hang out. It’s very peaceful, enjoyable and somewhat comical since you and your friends will all be in swim caps.
After a couple more laps we left, very satisfied. The lazy river exists and it is spectacular. Once again, thank you BU, for making my dreams a reality.
