In a rain-shortened tournament, the Boston University men’s tennis team had a tough opening to its season last Friday and Saturday at the UConn Invitational.
Due to inclement weather, the tournament was relocated from the University of Connecticut to the East Hartford Racquet Club. Since there were fewer courts at the new location, all matches were limited to one set.
All eight of the Terriers lost their singles matches, with the closest being UConn’s Scott Warden’s narrow defeat of BU’s Stefan Toubia, 6-5. The lone win for the Terriers came in a doubles match, when Toubia and junior James Bernstein defeated Bob Kelly and Thomas Wilbur of Fairfield University in a closely contested set, 8-7. The pair could not advance past Stony Brook University in the semifinals, losing 8-2.
In women’s action, BU had a successful opening weekend last Friday and Saturday at the Brown Invitational. Unlike the men’s tournament, rain did not affect play as the invitational ran according to schedule.
The Terriers had strong performances from the majority of the team. Of the eight girls who played singles matches, six advanced to at least the semifinals of their brackets, with freshman Petra Santini and junior Francine Whu winning all three of their matches. Both women won in straight sets each time.
In the doubles matches, the tandem of junior Elizabeth Corrao and sophomore Vanessa Steiner played their way into the finals of their bracket, but they fell just short in their set against Syracuse University, losing 8-6. Whu and freshman Stephanie Nunic also combined to win their first round of the doubles tournament, but they too lost narrowly to the Orange, 8-6, in the semifinals.
The men’s team next plays Friday against Hofstra University at the Track and Tennis Center. The women are on break for nearly a month until the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Philadelphia, Pa., Oct. 24-28.
