I’m not sure if everyone felt it, but last night the Earth shook a little bit. The Earth shook, and I felt chills as walls crumbled around me.
Last night, the International Students Consortium held a Multi-Faith Dinner in celebration of Yom Kippur, Ramadan, Dussera, Ghandi’s birthday and, above all, diversity.
As students, faculty and distinguished guests broke bread together and listened to various speakers, the Metcalf Ballroom became a mosaic of culture and religion that epitomizes Boston University’s eclectic population. “This is about us standing together,” Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said — being together, while still holding onto our own individuality.
I have never before had the opportunity to dine as the only Christian at a table with Jews, Muslims and Hindus. Last night, the Earth shook. Artificial walls that separate a diverse people crumbled and steps were taken toward reaching a common ground.
I’d like to thank the ISC for this event and offer a sincere hope that more occasions of this valuable nature take place on our campus. Achieving a lasting peace has to start somewhere. If it’s possible at BU, I feel inspired that it’s possible in the rest of the world.
