Having obtained a graduate degree from Boston University in 1997, and having been employed as the operation’s manager in Residential Safety from 1995-2001, it was with great interest that I read Bill Yelenak’s article (“GLSEN asks for Silber’s resignation,” Oct. 3 pg. 1).
Ms. Caplan’s remarks concerning the “media attention” casting BU in a “bad light” were of grave concern. When our leadership affords the same opportunity and fair treatment for everyone in the community, then we can eliminate the protections Dr. Silber removes from some in our community.
Personally, I have witnessed and reported different treatment in employment and housing for the gay community. My division and department directors were hostile to the news. The personnel department was not interested.
It is only because of the intense media scrutiny that the scandalous behavior of individuals and leadership became exposed.
Mr. Yelenak’s article and other efforts to expose the lack of leadership should be worn as a “badge of honor.” It is only through all of our efforts that we can educate and move ahead.
