The Boston University women’s soccer team ended its four-game losing streak on Sunday, beating the State University of New York at Binghamton, 1-0, in double overtime.
Sophomore midfielder Ashley Chassar scored her second goal of the season 1:19 into the second extra session, improving BU to 5-9-1 on the season and 2-2 in America East. The goal was also BU’s first since a 2-1 overtime win against Boston College on Oct. 2, a span that included five complete regulation games.
‘It’s so relieving,’ said senior tri-captain Allison Merkle. ‘I think that after this game, the goals will start coming. Before today, there was a wall in front of the net. We are going to stop trying to score so hard now.’
Chassar’s goal at the 101:19 mark came when she shot the ball from 30 yards away diagonally over senior goalkeeper Lauren Cherry and into the back of the net.
Though BU dominated the scoresheet in shots, 19-7, and corner kicks, 8-1, Binghamton rode the back of Cherry to get to overtime. She made 10 saves in the contest for the Bearcats (8-4-2).
‘This game was a battle for us and we had them,’ Merkle said. ‘Their keeper came up big.’
Junior goalie Jessica Clinton was as impressive for the Terriers, making three saves to earn her third shutout of the season and the 13th of her career.
BU looks for its second consecutive win on Thursday when it hosts Northeastern University at Nickerson Field. After that, the Terriers have only three conference games until the America East Tournament on Nov. 8. Only the top four teams during the regular season receive an invitation to the postseason, and BU, at 2-2, is in jeopardy of being left of the list. The Terriers have won tournament the past two seasons.
‘We are approaching every game like it’s a playoff game,’ Merkle said.
