Just in time for Halloween, A Static Lullaby’s self-titled album delivers screams galore. On “Hang ’em High,” singer/screecher Joe Brown masks intelligent lyrics, harmonies and melodies with his undecipherable howling. Fortunately, duel-vocalist and guitarist Dan Arnold manages to pull it together with his compatible contributions to “Mechanical Heart.” Possibly the best track on the album, the song mixes typical post-hardcore distortion, eerie vocals and even a capella with heavy metal-influenced guitar and intense drums. These creative and unexpected innovations are what make the LP a worthwhile listen for those who want to hear some ASL innovation, but overall, the album is little more than a few misplaced breakdowns burying what could have been great music.
