The America East Conference honored several key members of the Boston University men’s soccer team yesterday, after the group finished the season allowing only 11 goals in 17 games. That ties the 1985-program record.
Seven Terriers were honored, led by senior co-captain Zach Kirby, who was named America East Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the first team All-Conference team.
The Marietta, Ga., native has been a stronghold in BU’s backfield for four years and was named to the second team All-Conference team in 2004 and 2005.
In addition to Kirby, sophomore midfielder Neil Hlavaty earned a spot on the first team. Hlavaty has played in all 17 games, scored four goals and assisted for one this year for a total of nine points.
Sophomore forward Petur Sigurdsson, senior midfielder Steven Gahl and graduate student Moshe Shalchon were all given second team All-Conference honors.
Much like Kirby, Gahl and Shalchon have helped shape the imposing image of BU’s shutdown backfield, which has recorded seven shutouts this season, while Sigurdsson leads the team in goals (6) and points (13).
The Terriers’ youth was honored as well, with freshmen Richy Dorman (16 games, one assist) and Samuel Appiah (two goals, two assists) landing spots on the All-Rookie team.
