Beantown Notes has received an extension on the Oct. 31 deadline that Boston University initially gave the company to cease and desist its activities before taking legal action against the company, which pays students for lecture notes and then sells them to other students.
BU Associate General Counsel Robert B. Smith, who sent the initial letter to Beantown Notes, said the company had recently employed new counsel and asked for the extension.
‘Late in the day [Thursday], I got a voicemail from a woman lawyer downtown who was recently retained to represent Beantown Notes and wanted some additional time to meet with Beantown Notes and look over the letter we had sent them,’ Smith said. ‘As a matter of professional courtesy, I gave her additional time.’
Ian Herr, managing consultant to Beantown Notes, confirmed that the company had hired a new lawyer, but he refused to disclose her name.
Herr said the lawyer was still in the process of writing a response to BU and would not give any indication of how they plan to respond to the cease and desist order.
‘[The laywer] indicated that it would probably be midweek,’ Smith said.
