n “Khatami talks of peace, democracy,” is, perversely, the perfect headline for an inaccurate, misleading and incomplete account of yesterday’s events at Harvard University (Sept. 11, p.1). Contrary to the image illustrated by The Daily Free Press, many of the 200 protesters that gathered outside the Kennedy School of Government were neither conservative nor Jewish. The diverse group of protesters included the Harvard College Democrats, who unsuccessfully called on Khatami to condemn the violent abuses perpetrated by Mamoud Ahmadinejad, the current president of Iran. Also, conspicuously missing from the report was the statements made regarding homosexuality in Iran. Admist Khatami’s message of “peace and tolerance” he said, “Homosexuality is a crime in Iran, and crimes are punishable, and the fact that a crime could be punished by execution is debatable.” Additionally, Khatami defended the militant group, Hezbollah. It is upsetting and disturbing that The Daily Free Press chose to exclude revealing and significant facts from their article. I encourage the Free Press toward responsible reporting. Do your job and get the story straight.
