In response to Mr. Levy’s article, “Candidates must address issues college students find interesting,” he claims that college students are not interested in such issues as “social security, taxes, and education.” I hate to break it to Mr. Levy but college students across America should be following these issues, especially the problems with social security. Social security is running out. With the baby boomers retiring, there are more people than ever collecting social security. Higher standards of living have lead to longer life spans for the average American, which means that people are collecting social security for longer periods of time. The bottom line is that by the time current college students are 65 years old, there will be no social security. Why this does not concern Mr. Levy is beyond me. Today’s college students will not reap the benefits of social security despite the fact that we have been and will continue to pay the social security tax in our paychecks every week. While we may have “a good 40 years before [we] get to start thinking about retirement,” the problems with social security are not going away. The issue of social security needs to be addressed now to safeguard the future of America’s college students and following generations. Maybe Mr. Levy should be concerned with the fact that the social security debate is raised during every election yet politicians never seem to solve the problem while in office. Personally, I think the legalization of marijuana can wait until after solutions are reached on more pressing issues.
