Since he’s reached bona fide reality TV stardom thanks to his hit VH1 show Flavor of Love, most people forget that Flavor Flav was once a part of Public Enemy, one of hip-hop’s most influential rap groups, notorious for an innovative rap-rock sound and political lyrics. On his self-titled solo disc, Flavor Flav creates music that reflects his on-screen persona: kooky and eccentric. On the lead single “Flavor Man,” Flav unsuccessfully attempts to pick up where Public Enemy left off with heavy drums and boisterous rapping about himself. He is redeemed on “Unga Bunga Bunga,” an entertaining jungle-fused track complete with animal noises. Flav even dishes up some singing on the opener “Let It Show,” a throwback track that you can’t help but laugh at. While his newfound eclectic sound won’t make him the new Outkast, Flavor Flav pulls together some fun, guilty pleasures. Yeaah boy! Grade: C+
