Boston University’s ONE organization is using photography, book drives and film festivals to raise awareness on campus about global poverty. The BU chapter is currently in fourth place in the nationwide ONE Campus Challenge. The Campus Challenge is a national competition between student groups to determine which school has the most effective poverty-fighting campaign, BU ONE President Nicole Santomauro said. ‘ Points are earned by completing various awareness and advocacy actions, monthly challenges and the number of people who sign up on the Campus Challenge website. Every time a person signs up, the group earns 100 points, according to one.org. ‘Informing the BU community, a community of passionate young adults, puts these issues out in the open and we have the ability to advocate for change,’ Santomauro, a Sargent College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences senior, said. Last Thursday, students came together to pose for photos sporting ONE wristbands and white t-shirts to fight AIDS in the annual Face Campaign as part of ONE’s broader goals for fighting poverty. ‘ The photos taken will be used to create a collage poster, which will be displayed outside Warren Towers during World AIDS Week, which starts with World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, to raise awareness. ‘ ‘This event has been a ONE at BU tradition for the last couple of years each semester,’ Santomauro said. ‘It is a highly visible way to really raise awareness and it gets a lot of people involved.’ Along with the student attendees, other groups, including SigEp, the BosTones, Northeastern University’s Social Change for Peace Games, the Environmental Student Organization, Student Union, Liquid Fun and the Asian Student Union, gathered in the College of Communication basement to get their picture taken and join the fight against AIDS. Throughout the night, the group served food to participants, got signatures for their foreign aid reform petition, played music and showed a slide show of the pictures taken previously while everyone waited for their turn, Santomauro said. Santomauro attributed the night’s success to COM senior and photojournalism major Christina Sgueglia who took all the photos. ‘She was our extremely professional photographer,’ Santomauro said. ‘Her pictures turned out amazing.’ COM freshman Elizabeth Olenski said she attended the Face Campaign’s photo shoot because she thinks AIDS is an important issue more students should know about. ‘I enjoyed the overall experience,’ she said. ‘I am definitely going to convince my friends to come next time.’ Some students said past posters have been very successful. ‘ Last year, the poster outside Warren read ‘Make Poverty History.’ ‘They really hit a nerve,’ College of Arts and Sciences sophomore Sarah Vencloski said. Santomauro said she thinks the night was an overall success. ‘I was very happy with the turnout,’ she said. ‘It was great to see the support of other student groups on campus.’ The ONE group at BU is also hosting the ONE Film Festival in the George Sherman Union Conference Auditorium today at 7:30 p.m., where they will show films relevant to human rights such as ‘The Girl in the Caf’eacute;,’ ‘A Closer Walk’ and ‘Hotel Rwanda.’ The group also organized a book drive for this week to help the Liberian Literacy Foundation, Santomauro said. ‘ Santomauro said she has high hopes for the future of the organization. Next semester, the group is planning to raise awareness through a Battle of the Bands and a ONE rally/dance.
