Despite leaving Boston University’s chancellorship and Board of Trustees, President emeritus John Silber still uses the chancellor’s office on the ninth floor of 1 Sherborn St.
‘John Silber is still in his office,’ BU spokesman Colin Riley said. ‘This isn’t a political office it’s not like the governor who has to clear out of his office when a new governor is sworn in.’
President ad interim Aram V. Chobanian, however, has moved into the eighth floor executive office reserved for the president. Senior Vice President Richard Towle has also moved into an office on that floor, BU spokesman Kevin Carleton said.
The ninth floor’s future use is still somewhat uncertain because BU is not actively looking to fill the position of chancellor, Riley said.
‘There is a search for a president, but there is no search for a chancellor,’ he said. ‘That is not how the job is filled.’
Riley also said the positions differ because the president runs the university on a day-to-day basis, and the chancellor is someone who assists in other capacities.
He said the offices will continue to be administrative space.
‘It’s pretty self-explanatory that the offices up there will continue to be administrative, serving the senior administrators of the university,’ Riley said.
While the offices generally remain the same, some of Silber’s former staff now works for Chobanian, Carleton said.
‘Some who worked for Chancellor Silber have moved to the president or executive vice president,’ he said. ‘However, Silber hasn’t left the university. He is still a tenured professor and president emeritus.’
Carleton said Silber still has some staff to assist him with tasks such as archiving for historical purposes.
