First look at men’s basketball team on Sunday in exhibition

After months of waiting, the Boston University men’s basketball team will finally take to the court this Sunday afternoon in an exhibition game at ‘The Roof.’

The game will offer a glimpse of a team laden with high expectations and coming off an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers only lost a few seniors last year and are even stronger with the return of red-shirt junior guard Matt Turner. Turner enters the season surrounded by a talented squad that carried the Terriers to the conference title last season, even in his absence.

Sunday’s game will be nothing more than a chance for the Terriers to stretch their legs. After weeks of intrasquad scrimmages, the Terriers are itching to get on the court.

While the game will allow BU Coach Dennis Wolff to evaluate some of the players, especially the new freshmen, it will be the only time the team officially takes the court for the next two-and-a-half weeks. After Sunday’s game, the Terriers will jump to the other end of the basketball spectrum as they go from the One on One exhibition team to Stanford University and national television.

This season is one of great expectations for the Terriers, as they are widely considered the odds on favorite to cruise through the America East. With returners such as junior captain Kevin Fitzgerald, senior co-captain Billy Collins, and co-captain Turner, the Terriers will look not only to make the NCAA Tournament, but also perhaps earn a somewhat better draw than a No. 16 seed and a date with a top four team in the first round.

After Sunday’s game, the Terriers do not resume action until Monday, Nov. 18 in the first round of the Preseason National Invitational Tournament at Stanford. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2.
