Food, The Muse

Food

The title of an assigned feature article I had as a Public Relations major was Offal-ly Delicious,’ exploiting my tendency to make puns that aren’t technically puns. After a semester of PowerPoints that explained how to persuade people into promotions, I decided to instead dance with the ever-elusive dream of becoming a lifestyle/food writer, discovering global cuisine a la Anthony Bourdain or Thomas Keller. Until I have the resources to blast off in a hot air balloon to global destination du jour, I will conquer the Greater Boston area, armed with cutlery, protected by a napkin shoved in my shirt collar. I intend to suck out culinary jewels hidden in the crevices of Boston like a Wellfleet oyster.

I was once a child of frozen lasagna dinners laced with monosodium glutamate, that instructed to microwave a ‘chocolate’ brownie in order to unglue it from the mashed potatoes. As I aged, my palate and appreciation for interesting cuisine grew as well, taking friends to sample pickled lemon soda at the local Thai restaurant in the Long Island town I live.’ Eating in restaurants is a luxury that can be enjoyed on a student budget, from Tibetan fare in Cambridge to poached pig’s lungs in the South End. Affordable weekend butchering classes on Charles Street or free culinary events sponsored by various Boston-based consulates are attainable and should be brought to the forefront. I vow to spice up the FreeP’s food feature, taking the idea that the only off-campus options for BU students are Sunset Cantina or U-Burger and discarding it in the insinkerator.

I strive to tantalize taste buds and tease palates, to not only increase the flow of restaurant capital, but also to better the cultural exchange rate, and hopefully whisk my readers off to local destinations they have yet to sample, but, soon after reading, will crave to do so. To join my weekly outings, feel free to email at tledner@bu.edu. All are welcome (even those who find satisfaction in a Velveeta sandwich).
