The Ting Tings bring the beats

British pop-rock duo The Ting Tings performed a dynamic show at the Paradise Rock Club last Wednesday, the second show of their U.S. tour. Members Katie White (vocals, guitar, bass drum) and Jules De Martino (vocals, drums, electronics) rocked the crowd with their upbeat sound and high-energy stage presence, performing tracks from their album ‘We Started Nothing.’

Before opening their show with ‘Great DJ,’ the first song of their album, the duo made one request: that the audience ‘just dance!’ An easy request to which the audience complied by moving their bodies to the electro-bubblegum rock grooves blasting from the speakers.

A few songs into the show, De Martino swapped his silver-glitter drum set for a synthesizer and sampled some classics such as ‘Walk This Way’ by Aerosmith and Run DMC and the GhostBuster’s theme song. White also displayed a talent for offbeat instruments when she broke out a giant bass drum emblazoned with the Ting Tings’ name.

The band closed their just-under-an-hour set with their latest single ‘That’s Not My Name,’ to which the crowd went wild dancing and singing along.

If the Ting Tings weren’t entertaining enough, the opening act certainly didn’t disappoint ‘-‘- that is, in the entertainment factor. HOTTUB, a female rap trio from Oakley, Cali., warmed up the crowd with their outrageous lyrics and even more ridiculous dance moves. Outfitted in 80s aerobics-inspired vintage ensembles, courtesy of Goodwill in West Campus, HOTTUB shimmied, grinded and humped their way from the stage to the crowd. The eccentric trio ended their set by inviting audience members on stage to dance along.

Between the Ting Tings’ rocking jams and the HOTTUBs’ obvious encouragement, the audience did a good job of fulfilling the Ting Tings’ request to dance.
