The Boston University athletics department has named Al Lattell as its director of lacrosse operations, in an announcement made Tuesday by men’s lacrosse coach Ryan Polley and women’s lacrosse coach Liz Robertshaw.

“For three years Coach Lattell has been vital to our program’s development,” Polley said in his statement. “Nobody cares more about BU lacrosse than Coach Lattell and we’re excited to promote him and move him to a full-time position. This is another example of the University’s commitment to furthering our athletic programs, specifically making our lacrosse programs nationally competitive with our facilities and resources.”

“We’re excited to welcome Al into the women’s lacrosse side of the BU lacrosse family,” Robertshaw added. “He has proven to be a loyal asset to the men’s program over the years and having witnessed firsthand his strong work ethic, desire to learn about all aspects of both the men’s and women’s games and his unparalleled passion for everything BU lacrosse, I know he will be a great fit.”

Since 2013, Lattell has served as a volunteer assistant coach for the men’s team, coordinating team travel and camps alongside his work on the sideline. During games, he instructed faceoff specialists like junior Sam Talkow, who led the Patriot League in faceoff percentage in 2015 riding a .659 clip. Lattell also assisted with in-game substitutions.

In the new position, Lattell will head the day-to-day operations of both BU lacrosse programs. He will continue to coordinate the teams’ travel and will take on new responsibilities with student managers and alumni relations. He will also head both teams’ community outreach efforts and their on-campus recruiting efforts.

Lattell graduated in 2008 from BU after playing four years of club lacrosse while serving as the team captain for his final two years. He received a degree in political science from the College of Arts and Sciences and remained with the club team for four seasons after he graduated as an assistant coach.

“I’d like to thank Coach Polley and his staff for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the men’s lacrosse program for the past two seasons,” Lattell said. “Being a BU alumnus, it has been special to be part of the building of the program and I am so grateful that I was afforded that opportunity. I also want to thank Coach Robertshaw and her staff, as well as Drew Marrochello and Dan Satter, for making it possible for me to continue to be a part of both BU lacrosse programs. I’m excited to begin a new chapter with the women’s team and to continue to work with the men’s team.”
