Terriers take two in weekend series

It’s the word that any coach hates to be on the receiving end of:

Sweep.

The University of Delaware learned this lesson the hard way after the Boston University softball captured both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, 5-0, and 5-4, at Malvern Field.

The Terriers felt the flair for the dramatics in a back-and-forth battle in the second game of the doubleheader. Delaware got on the board first as third baseman Lauren Mark smacked a two-run double off sophomore starter Robyn Horrick, giving the Blue Hens an early 2-0 lead.

BU cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when junior third baseman Aryn Rangel’s RBI single knocked in senior second baseman Kerry Herr. Delaware would add another run in the top of the second, but Horrick would help her own cause by poking a two-run single just inside the first base bag, scoring sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek and sophomore left fielder Tiffany Finateri to tie the score at 3.

The two teams traded runs in the fifth inning and headed into the extra innings knotted at four. But it was Knesek’s deep single to center field that sent the Terriers home happy, driving in sophomore pinch runner Kate Abney from second base for the victory.

“We worked too hard not to win [the game],” said BU coach Amy Hayes. “It was a total team effort.”

King (5-1) notched her fifth win of the season, and a well-deserved win at that. King relieved Horrick with one out in the seventh and runners on first and second. After walking the first batter she faced to load the bases, King bore down to strike out the next two Blue Hens and escaped the inning unharmed. King would go on to shut the door on Delaware the following inning.

“I was pretty tired out there,” King said. “I was still hurting from Hofstra [University in last week’s games] … and wasn’t throwing my best. But they were chasing my pitches … and I just stayed confident.”

King’s performance in the second game topped off her dominating afternoon on the mound in the first game of the twin bill. King threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout while striking out 12 en route to a 5-0 win.

The Terriers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning as sophomore designated player Karen Seidler smashed a two-run single to right field, scoring King and freshman center fielder Abby Pauley.

With BU up, 3-0, in the fifth inning, Rangel crushed the first home run at Malvern Field this season. The two-run blast to left-center field put the Terriers up, 5-0, and essentially put the game out of reach for the Blue Hens.

With the doubleheader sweep, the Terriers improve to 14-11 overall, and 3-3 in America East. Delaware drops to 11-12 (4-6 America East).

“These were two huge wins,” Hayes said. “The girls just came out and had fun.”

BU will hope for a repeat performance this afternoon in a doubleheader rematch against the Blue Hens. Originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, the games were canceled due to the field conditions at Malvern Field after Saturday night’s rain. King and company look to carry the momentum from Saturday’s contests as conference play heats up.

“I think this is the start of an upward climb for us,” King said. “We’re playing together … and everyone is contributing. I think we can continue this trend [in conference play]. It all starts today.”
