Men’s lacrosse focussed despite loss to Wildcats

Only on rare occasions are teams satisfied with a 12-3 defeat. Yesterday was one of those times for the Boston University men’s lacrosse team.

In a match that was rescheduled from Monday, BU (3-5) played shorthanded throughout, only bringing three defensemen, three attackmen and six midfielders to face the University of New Hampshire. Their opponent entered the contest with a squad of more than 40 with their eyes locked on a division crown.

Boston University was pleased with its effort, as this loss was not nearly as bad as the 21-13 decision that it suffered earlier in the season. And although they barely had enough players to field a team, there were a number of positives for the Terriers.

BU coach Daniel Morris was happy with the effort that his team put forth.

“We had a game plan, and we were able to execute [it],” Morris said. “It was basically to hold the ball a lot. [The score was] only 4-2 at halftime and were feeling pretty good. Guys went into this game today thinking that we were going to get shellacked, [but] we realized that we could run with this team, and we did it for three out of four quarters of the game. Guys that were [here] came away with better confidence.”

Sophomore goalie Brad Dynowicz garnered praise from Morris. “Brad had a tremendous game today, and in my opinion he is the best goalie in the league. He makes the best saves, and he was definitely a huge factor today.”

Senior co-captain Mitch Wilson netted all three goals for BU in a great individual performance.

“A lot of reserves stepped up and played well against a very tough team,” Dynowicz said. “It was a well played game — but [we] would have liked to win. [There was] outstanding defense in front of me.”

Dynowicz is talking about the play of three freshman defensemen — Alan Bishop, Thomas Merolla and Karl Swierzik — the only defensive players to make the trip.

With the regular season coming to a close, making the playoffs is the number one priority for the Terriers. The six best teams make the postseason, with the top two teams receiving a first round bye.

“Coast Guard [today] is a make or break for us,” Morris said. “If we win, we will at least have the sixth seed. Any of those bottom four teams that we could play we can beat. We got robbed against Northeastern and UConn. I am looking forward to another shot at [those teams] because I know we can beat them. I feel pretty good that we can make it to the final round.”

After the Coast Guard Academy (3-5) today, BU will only have one more league game before the playoffs. Unfortunately, that game comes Monday against the University of Rhode Island who is undefeated thus far.

Dynowicz pointed out that two of Coast Guard’s three wins have come against a hapless New York University team.

“It’s a game we need,” Dynowicz said about today’s matchup. “They come from a weak division, [but] I am sure they are capable of stepping up and giving us a hard time. Two years ago they were the undefeated league champs.”
