Ross To Speak To Senate At Coseglia’s First Meeting

Boston City Councilor Michael Ross (Back Bay, Fenway) will discuss city issues with Student Union senators tonight as the Senate ushers in a new semester with a new president.

College of Communication senior Zachary Coseglia will host his first meeting as Union president tonight, one week after Michael Moffo resigned due to poor academic standing.

Assistant Dean of Students Allen Ward and Student Activities Office Director Carolyn Norris are planning on attending the meeting, Coseglia said. He said Dean of Students Norman Johnson may come as well.

Carl Woog, a sophomore in the University Professors program, and Onaje Crawford, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, will both be considered for ratification by the Senate tomorrow night after Coseglia appointed them for VP of Financial Affairs and VP of Multicultural Affairs, respectively. Former VP of Financial Affairs Caroline Preis will assume the role of executive vice president.

Ross said he looks forward to hearing from “some of BU’s active students” and discussing issues important to college students. He said the session will be a discussion rather than a speech.

“I always come back from these things having learned more,” Ross said. “It’s an opportunity to talk to [active students] and hear from them about what they’re interested in. I’m not really going out there with an agenda.”

Ross said he will encourage students to become more involved in the city and issues of importance to students in Boston.

“I’m going to encourage them to get involved and embrace the city,” he said. “I think we have a tremendous opportunity and potential at BU.”

The College Democrats will attend the meeting to talk to Ross, for whom they campaigned at BU in last year’s election, Senate Chairwoman Kirsten Lundeen said.

“Since I have been in office, I have always made a concerted effort to keep my ear to the ground when it comes to students and student issues,” Ross said. “Staying connected to the University and high schools is very important to me and helps me stay connected to student issues in Boston.”

Coseglia said he will address senators at the beginning of the meeting and encourage them to continue the work they started first semester. He said the speech will be a “call to action.”

Coseglia said he will address Moffo’s resignation, but not at length. Moffo will not speak to the senators, though he said last week he may be at the meeting to listen to Ross.

“I’m just going to make sure everyone knows what’s going on,” Coseglia said. “I’ll address it, and then we’ll go on with everything we need to do in this semester.”

“I want to start the semester the same way we started last semester,” he said. “We have a job to do and a job to continue. I don’t think the meeting should have a somber tone.”

Coseglia said he expects the Union will have a “good and proactive mood,” despite Moffo’s resignation.

“I’m really optimistic and excited to be able to do work with the Union this semester,” he said. “I think a lot of us wish we had a Senate meeting last week or the week before.”

Lundeen, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, said she also looks forward to a positive start to the semester at tomorrow’s meeting.

“I think the mood should be a positive one,” she said. “We have a lot coming up for next semester.”

Lundeen said this semester will take on a distinctively different tone from last semester.

“The dynamics of last semester were a lot about building relationships,” she said. “Now we’re going to take those relationships and do something with them.”

The Senate will meet in room 206 of the Photonics Building rather than their normal room 211, Lundeen said.
