BU Gets Fashionable

Sargent Gym was transformed into a dazzling runway Saturday evening for the much anticipated “Winter Fashion Show.” The show featured the designs of BU alumna Jessica McClintock — a 1950 graduate of the Division of General Education — and debuted her new line, “An American Collection.”

This classy event drew 400 people to mingle with alumni, sample hors d’oeuvres and watch as the catwalk swelled with shimmering floor-length side slit skirts and strapless glitter stretch bustier dresses.

The stars of the show were BU students and members of the Student Alumni Council, an organization of undergraduate students who work to increase alumni-student relations as well as school unity. Each girl held her head high and strutted her stuff with confidence and conviction. Once the music was on and the lights were flashing, everything came together perfectly.

Each of the nine scenes was color coordinated and featured different styles and designs from one of three of McClintock’s most recent collections: the newest being “American Dream,” followed by “Holiday” and “American Collection.” McClintock’s designs were form fitting and funky, unlike Cinderellaesque-ball gown style of recent.

The scene “Black and White Sizzle” was notable for its unique approach — transforming gowns of traditional black and white into mesmerizing patterns. The girls modeled satin strapless bustier dresses with color blocks that alternated black and white — sometimes sporting two-piece iridescent taffeta halter dresses with rhinestone fronts.

In the scene “Light Blue Wonder”, the runway shimmered with sleeveless off-the-shoulder glittering ice-blue dresses as well as form fitting embroidered satin designs. These gowns, perfect for formal dances, are all part of McClintock’s new approach to target young customers strictly headed for the prom or the altar.

The following scene, “Femme Fatale,” featured many layered shades of pink, blending a sexy and sensual tone with a soft and delicate vibe. The iridescent and knee-length gowns fashioned a metallic coral mesh. This scene’s upbeat vibe complemented the quick-step entrance of the models as they sauntered down the runway, flaunting the beautiful style of their captivating gowns.

The final scene, “True,” featured McClintock’s new “American Collection.” As the girls walked with dignity to Lenny Kravitz’s cover of The Guess Who “American Woman,” they wore red, white and blue rhinestones, feathered boas, and satin dresses; all of which is symbolic of American pride. In light of recent events in our country, the dresses could not have been more appropriate. Dan Seed, a COM student, noted, “I thought it was very fitting that there was a patriotic theme at the end. It added a nice touch to the show.”

“A Winter Fashion Show” was held in conjunction with the honoring of McClintock by the General Education Alumni Association during Reunion Weekend 2002. “This is a great venue and opportunity for large scale student and alumni networking. It also gives the student community a chance to get a glimpse of the success of an alumna in the business and fashion design world,” said Keith Tavares, BU Young Alumni Vice President.

Ultimately, the show was a huge success and a lot of fun. The experience was one of BU’s most tasteful public events.
