STAFF EDIT: Fresh Alternatives

How many students can say they have spent a week breathing in the fresh air and admiring the lush scenery of Iceland? Twenty-nine Boston University students now can, as they experienced the Icelandic culture, got to know their classmates and participated in various activities in Reykjavik. This substance-free vacation organized by the Wellness Center proved to be a positive Break alternative for BU students.

Offering students a choice between trips to Aruba and Iceland, the Wellness Center provided BU students the chance to take a trip that is somewhat out of the ordinary. At the same time, it encouraged a healthy lifestyle for students looking to get more out of their vacations than a hangover.

It was nice to see students taking advantage of these opportunities. They deserve credit for originality and for pursuing self-improvement when debauchery could have been expected elsewhere. Taking the initiative to get involved with a trip like the one to Reykjavik showed students’ excitement about experiencing a new country. It helps build a sense of community within BU, as the lack of alcoholic substances allowed students on the trips to really get to know their traveling companions.

Kudos to the Wellness Center for its impressive Spring Break offerings. With such a vast group of students at BU, these trips were perfect to get different students together and experiencing new things. Maintaining a substance-free Spring Break might be a challenge for some; however, students who show interest in these trips are often unaffected, or even pleased, by such a policy. Students should continue to keep their eyes open for opportunities such as those offered by the Wellness Center. Such opportunities have the ability to promote new friendships, fun and different experiences, as well as a bit of culture.
