Core Curriculum Current Affairs Association Forum on “America Abroad”

Dear Mr. Cassidy and Daily Free Press Staff,

I would like to thank the Daily Free Press for sending a representative to the Core Current Affairs Association’s inaugural event on Wednesday. The forum, entitled “America Abroad”, was a wonderful success, and the CCAA Student Board was thrilled to see your follow-up article on Thursday. However, there were a few inaccuracies in the article that I would like to clarify.

The Core Current Affairs Association is sponsored by the CAS Core Curriculum. The group is composed of both sophomores and juniors who Core students and Core alumni. I am a junior and a Core alumna, as well as the Chairwoman of the CCAA Student Board. With the help of the Core Curriculum’s Program Coordinator, Sonia Pastuhov-Pastein, and the rest of the dedicated Core staff, the CCAA intends to host three forums a semester covering a variety of current event topics. The forums will consist of three speakers: a local journalist, a Boston University professor, and a Core Curriculum professor. Of our three speakers for the “America Abroad” forum, Diana Wylie is a Core and African History professor at BU, and Andrew Bacevich is a professor of International Relations and the Director of the Boston University Center for International Relations. Christopher Lydon, former host of WBUR’s “The Connection”, created “Parachute Radio” this year, conducting interviews with a variety of people in countries across the world and broadcasting his conversations on the Internet.

Thanks to the diversity and experience of our three speakers, the CCAA forum on “America Abroad” attracted an audience of 200 people this past Wednesday. The CCAA Student Board is hopeful that we will have an equally positive response for our next event on October 28, 2002, which will be about the conflict over Iraq. We invite the staff of the Daily Free Press and the members of the entire Boston University community to attend what should be another fantastic discussion of such a critical topic in current events. See you in October!

Holly Naylor CAS ’04 Chairwoman, Core Current Affairs Association
