Students, professors turn trivia to philanthropy

No other game show has ever offered multiple choice answers quite like this one.

”E: I don’t really have a damn clue,” emcee and School of Management professor Jeffrey Allen jokingly offered contestants during a particularly tricky accounting question in the ‘Are You Smarter Than a Ph.D.?’ fundraiser hosted by Alpha Kappa Psi and based on FOX’s ‘Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?’

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, a nonprofit organization to help Boston youth, will receive more than $300 from the fundraiser hosted by the professional business fraternity. About 100 students attended to watch as 10 SMG students and professors battled over trivia in the Photonics Center to raise funds for various charities.’

‘This is why you should pay attention to everything you hear, because you never know when it is going to come up again,’ SMG sophomore Hitesh Kewlani told the audience after asked how many times Meryl Streep had been nominated for an Academy Award.

Similar to the television show, contestants had 10 chances to correctly answer as many trivia questions as they could. Three teams of two students each were paired with a different professor on each question. They could use their professor as a ‘lifeline’ if they were stumped.’

Peter Arnold, Mark Roberts, David Randall and Raymond Wilson made up the panel of SMG professors.’

Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity, hosted the game show. Lily Chang, the fraternity’s community service director, and Tiffany Linin, its social affairs director, sent out an open invitation for students to audition for the game.’

The three teams were each assigned a different charity. ‘The Victors’ played for The Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston, ‘Ebony and Ivory’ played for the American Red Cross and ‘Dream Team’ played for United Nations Children’s Fund.

When asked to name all four judges on the current season of ‘American Idol,’ SMG freshman Hafsah Al-Hassan said, ‘Professor Wilson knows!’

The question categories ranged from standard SMG curriculum, such as operations management, accounting and marketing, to more miscellaneous topics such as ‘In the News’ and sports.’

Contestants struggled the most with the category of BU trivia. The questions, ‘In which year was the BU mascot Rhett born?’ and ‘Name the three founders of BU’ stumped nearly all participants.’

Many audience members carried signs to support contestants and cheer them on.

‘The Victors’ won first place, so BGCB will receive $300 plus guest donations. As runner-up, UNICEF will receive $200 and The American Red Cross will receive $100.

SMG senior Steven Baek, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, said he thought the night was a success.

‘[There] were a lot of entertaining people tonight,’ Baek said.’

Kewlani said he would love to participate again next year. Chang and Linin said the game should be an annual production.
