Flaherty, Yoon to run on ‘joint ticket’

Boston mayoral candidate Michael Flaherty and former candidate Sam Yoon will announce today their plans to run together for office as mayor and deputy mayor, Flaherty told supporters in a letter last night.

The partnership of the two City Councilors-at-Large comes a week after Yoon came third to incumbent Mayor Thomas Menino and Flaherty in the preliminary election that narrowed the candidate field of four to two. Yoon earned 21 percent of the vote, three points behind Flaherty’s 24.

Together, the relatively young candidates ‘- Flaherty is 40 and Yoon is 39 ‘- account for 45 percent of the 82,000 Bostonians who cast ballots, only six percent less than Menino’s 51 percent majority.

‘I am asking Sam, a colleague and a friend, along with his impressive campaign, to partner with me as a running mate on a joint ticket,’ he said. ‘Because, together, we agree, Boston can’t wait four more years to change our city.

‘Sam Yoon is not only endorsing our bid for Mayor, he will campaigning alongside us [sic], as Boston’s future Deputy Mayor,’ he said.

Flaherty said in the letter he is confident he and Yoon can win together, despite the rivalry the pair shared until earlier this month.

‘By standing together today, we are showing Boston that a Flaherty-Yoon administration will embrace good ideas, even if they originate from former rivals,’ he said. ‘Last Tuesday, Mayor Menino spent $1.5 million and activated his whole political machine, but half of the people who voted refused to accept the status quo of the last 16 years.

‘We are confident, over the next five weeks, with your help, that we can change our city,’ he said.

The two candidates will announce the new ticket at a City Hall Plaza press conference around 10:15 a.m. today.
