Former BU basketball player advances in Ill. Senate Race

Illinois State Treasurer and former Boston University men’s basketball player Alexi Giannoulias won the Democratic primary Tuesday night in his home state, keeping him in contention to fill President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat.

The 1998 College of Arts and Sciences alumnus will run against Republican Rep. Mark Kirk in the Nov. 2 general election.

Giannoulias played for the Terriers for two seasons, including BU’s 1997 NCAA Tournament run. He redshirted the 1995-96 season after transferring from the University of Chicago in September of that year. He would make 21 appearances in his short career for the Terriers, making the America East Academic Honor Roll both years.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Giannoulias went on to earn a law degree from Tulane University School of Law. He would also play a year of professional basketball in Greece. The son of Greek immigrants, he has visited his home country frequently and speaks the language fluently.

In 2006, Giannoulias was elected state treasurer of Illinois. At 33, he is currently the youngest person in the United States to hold that office.
