Softball starts conference play with showdown vs. Seawolves

The Boston University softball team will begin conference play this weekend with a doubleheader against Stony Brook University on Saturday and another game against the Seawolves on Sunday.

The Terriers (15-10, 0-0 America East) should be feeling confident after last weekend, when they swept a pair of doubleheaders with Dartmouth College and the College of the Holy Cross. After suffering some tough tournament losses early in the season, they seem to be gathering momentum on the way into conference play.

If senior outfielder April Setterlund hits half as well this weekend as she did last weekend, BU doesn’t need to worry much about offense. In four games against Dartmouth and Holy Cross, Setterlund went 11-for-11 with 15 RBIs and four home runs. Overall, she has a .597 average and a 1.194 slugging percentage, leading AE in both categories.

The rest of the team hasn’t been doing badly at the plate, either. Junior catcher Caitlin Rentler is hitting .377 with 23 RBIs, and senior infielder Rachel Hebert has maintained a .588 slugging percentage while hitting .318.

BU’s pitching has been strong as well &- senior ace Cassidi Hardy has been as excellent as expected, with a 9-3 record so far and a 2.60 ERA. Freshman Whitney Tuthill also made a good showing last weekend, picking up a win against Dartmouth and one against Holy Cross. Both will likely see some action against Stony Brook this weekend.

The Seawolves (13-8, 3-0), like the Terriers, are on something of a roll right now after a few rough tournament losses early in the year. They are 10-2 in their last 12 games, and senior pitcher Alyssa Struzenberg has been dominant, with a 9-4 record and a 1.51 ERA in 15 appearances.

Stony Brook has outscored its opponents 83-61 on the year, while BU, which has played 4 more games, holds a 167-113 edge in that category. The Seawolves have been winning relatively close, low-scoring games recently, but have not yet had to contend with an offense of the Terriers’ caliber.

Saturday’s first game begins at 1 p.m. at the BU softball field.
