Bustamante drafted by New York Red Bulls

Former Boston University men’s soccer player Michael Bustamante learned his soccer career was far from over Tuesday. In fact, he’s getting a brand new start. During the Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft, the New York Red Bulls selected Bustamante with the 13th pick. Bustamante was taken 51st overall in the entire draft, which put him in the supplemental draft because only the first 38 picks constitute the MLS Super Draft.

With Bustamante going to the Red Bulls, he becomes only the 6th BU player ever to be drafted into the MLS, which is quite an accomplishment for the Terrier. He becomes the only Terrier in the past two years to be drafted. The last BU player was Samuel Appiah, who was drafted in 2010 by the Houston Dynamo.

Bustamante was one of the most decorated players in BU men’s soccer history. In his first season at BU, he was named both the America East Midfielder and Rookie of the Year.

Through his first three years as a Terrier, he posted great numbers and was highly regarded for his play at midfield. However, he missed his senior year in 2011 due to injury.

The Massachusetts native was allowed to come back for the 2012 season and didn’t disappoint. This past year he put up 10 points on three goals and four assists. After the strong season, he ended up ninth on the Terriers’ all-time assists list and became only the fourth Terrier to be given the All-Northeast Region award, a truly remarkable feat coming off of an injury.

With all of the accolades and strong play, it appears Bustamante has all of the tools to be successful in the pros.
