The Boston University Terriers will be well-represented in the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Former Boston University men’s hockey defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk was named to the United States national men’s hockey team while 2012-13 women’s hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin and former standouts Jenn Wakefield, Catherine Ward and Tara Watchorn were named to the Canadian national women’s hockey team.
Shattenkirk, a native of Greenwich, Conn., plays for the St. Louis Blues and recently signed a four-year, $17 million extension following a 23-point season in 2012-13. The four-year NHL veteran has been impressive this season with six goals and 22 assists in 48 games. The 24-year old played for the Terriers from 2007 through 2010 and helped BU win the National Championship during the 2008-09 season.
Poulin finished her junior season with the Terriers back in March and will compete for her second Olympic gold medal. As a co-captain for the Terriers in 2012-13, Poulin set the BU single-season assists record with 36 and finished the year with 55 points. Poulin scored both goals in Canada’s 2-0 win in the gold-medal game over the United States in 2010.
Ward will join Poulin on Team Canada for the second time. The defenseman was the Terriers’ first All-American following the 2010-11 season and helped lead BU to its first NCAA title game.
Wakefield and Watchorn are both first-time Olympians. Wakefield ranks second in the Terriers’ history with 61 goals, despite only playing two seasons under BU coach Brian Durocher. Watchorn was a three-time Hockey East All-Star while sporting 21 goals, 63 assists and plus-40 plus-minus rating.
Team Canada is pursuing its fourth straight gold medal.
