BU students win vote, bring Michael Cera to Boston

‘ One thousand five hundred Boston University students voted to put BU in the lead over Emerson College, Boston College, Brandeis University and other schools by almost 600 votes to bring actor Michael Cera and his new movie to Boston.

‘Youth in Revolt’ drew college students to AMC Loews Theater at Boston Common after BU students won a free screening in an online contest on the website eventful.com. A crowd of 600 attended the screening, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, which was followed by a question and answer session with co-stars of the film Cera and Portia Doubleday.

‘ ‘[Cera] is my favorite actor,’ College of General Studies freshman Jamie Shaw said. ‘I voted for him online to come to BU.’

But while BU students had a reserved section in the audience, the movie was open to anyone in the Boston area who stood in line or had a ticket prior to the event.’ ‘

The movie was co-organized by Allie Marketing Company and HP, who got in contact with students across campuses, HP campus brand ambassador and College of Arts and Sciences senior Dan Chizzoniti said.’ ‘ ‘

Chizzoniti introduced Cera and Doubleday to the crowd.’

‘How’d you guys like the movie?’ he asked.’

The crowd cheered. Cera and Doubleday then walked to the front of the theater and sat down to answer questions.

‘It’ll get funnier, I promise,’ Cera joked.’

The co-stars discussed their most embarrassing moments on set.

‘Making out with a dog,’ Doubleday said.

Cera said the movie was his favorite to film so far.

‘I’ve been lucky with the parts I’ve been able to play,’ he said.

He also offered encouragement to aspiring actors.

‘Yeah, just keep trying,’ he said.

Emerson freshman Kailey Godoy said she heard about the night through the Facebook group Boston Premiere Screenings, which enters members to win tickets to movie screenings.’

‘I went on the group [website] and I was really excited when I saw ‘Youth in Revolt’ come up on screen,’ she said. ‘I entered the contest immediately after it showed up on my newsfeed.”

Dimension Films, makers of the movie, filmed the audience reaction to the movie and asked for attendees volunteers to do testimonials that may be used for national TV commercials.

Eventful.com also held the same competition for schools in Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago. The last day to vote was Nov. 29 and those who voted were informed via email the date, time and location of the screening and where to get tickets.’

Most attendees said they heard about the movie through the Facebook group ‘Bring Michael Cera to BU,’ created by College of Communication freshman Christopher Kopcow. Others said they heard through freshman Ryan Piccirillo’s blog ‘Freshman Denial,’ where he made an update to encourage BU students to vote.’

School of Education freshman Krista Laforce was the first in line at Student Activities Center to get her ticket.’

‘I really love Cera,’ she said. ‘And I really wanted to see the movie.”
