Terriers to play Providence in WNIT first round

The Boston University women’s basketball team has received an automatic bid to the Women’s NIT as the highest-finishing America East team left out of the NCAA Tournament.

The Terriers will face Providence College in the first round at home on Thursday in their second straight WNIT appearance. Game time has yet to be announced.

BU lost to Boston College, 68-53, in the second round of the 2008-09 WNIT. But coach Kelly Greenberg’s squad will get another crack at it this year after falling to eventual AE champion University of Vermont in the semifinals of the conference tournament, 69-52, thus ending any hope for making the Big Dance.

They head into the game having lost three of their last five, after putting together winning streaks of three and five during the heart of conference play.
