Both BU hoops teams picked to win AE

It could be a very good winter for Boston University basketball if two preseason predictions hold true.

The men’s and women’s teams at BU were both picked to finish first in the America East conference for the upcoming 2010-11 season by the preseason coaches’ poll. The women were a unanimous selection for the spot in the conference while the men received six of the nine votes cast in the poll.

The men’s squad is coming off a season in which it went 21-14 and came just one game away from the NCAA tournament in coach Patrick Chambers’s first season at BU. The Terriers fell to the University of Vermont in the AE championship game. They went on to make it to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational, where they lost to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Senior guard John Holland and junior forward Jake O’Brien were both named to the preseason all-conference team with Holland being a unanimous selection.

The women’s squad will look to go from a young, inexperienced team a year ago to a much more veteran-led squad in 2010-11. Sophomore guard Chantell Alford, last year’s AE Rookie of the Year and all-conference honoree, finds herself on the preseason all-conference team for the first time. She is joined by teammates junior guard Alex Young and freshman guard Mo Moran on the team.

The men get their start Nov. 12 at Northeastern University while the women open the same day against Boston College at Case Gymnasium.
