An armed man stole thousands of dollars in cash from Jillian’s Boston, located on the corner of Landsdowne and Ipswich streets, Saturday morning after tying up three employees.
The man approached a manager at the popular billiards club as she went to the administrative offices on the top floor of the building. He ordered her to fill a knapsack with money from a safe. It is not known how the man entered the building.
According to Boston Police Department spokesman Cliff Connolly, the two had a discussion about which exit the man should use to avoid being seen. During the discussion, Connolly said, two club employees entered the building.
The man forced the employees into a room, where he ordered the manager to duct-tape their hands and feet. He then duct-taped the manager before leaving with the money. None of the three employees were injured.
Connolly said no arrests have been made in connection with the case. He said police are interviewing victims and anyone that might have seen the robber.
Twenty-somethings make up a large number of Jillian’s patrons. Some Boston University students expressed reluctance to visit the club after the incident, citing their fear of another robbery.
Though she did not know previously about the robbery at Jillian’s, School of Management senior Monna Gandhi was shocked.
“It’s scary that something happened so close to campus,” she said.
Gandhi said she would probably return to the club if the robber was caught and security increased.
“I think I would be a little nervous,” she said.
Anita Paladugu, a College of Arts and Sciences senior, also said she would attend Jillian’s again, but only when accompanied by a group of people.
“I would probably go with a bunch of people — not with myself,” she said.
