Consistency springs Terriers to No. 6

The Boston University women’s lacrosse team (3-1) won a pair of games over the weekend against Temple University and Ohio State University, which bumped the Terriers up one spot to No. 6 in the national rankings.

The Terriers faced a two-goal deficit twice in the game against Temple but managed a comeback to edge the Owls, 8-7. A member of the senior class scored each of BU’s eight goals.

BU coach Sue Murphy said the game was a good experience in that it showed the team that it could respond to being behind at points of the game. She also said she sought and found leadership in her senior players.

“When the pressure comes on, it seems that I can lean on the seniors,” Murphy said. “Three players that really stuck out in my mind were [senior midfielder] Kyle Rutowski, who had three goals in the second half. [Senior midfielder] Chrissy Lombard paced the game for us and did a good job on the draw controls. [Junior goalkeeper] Brooke Barrett came through with some big plays in goal.”

The win was third in a row for Barrett. She made nine saves against Temple and 15 saves in Sunday’s win against Ohio State.

Murphy said consistency has been the catalyst for Barrett’s success.

“She is playing very well right now and very consistently,” Murphy said. “She’s playing at the top of her games.”

Only four games into the season, BU has had to deal with more than its fair share of adversity. Most importantly, the Terriers don’t have a home field. Because of renovations at Nickerson Field, the Terriers will play their first five “home games” at three alternate sites. Tomorrow’s home opener against No. 12 Dartmouth College was scheduled to be played at Boston College, but due to a scheduling conflict, the site was moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 2:00 p.m.

“It’s a little bit of adjustment,” Murphy said. “It’s a little disheartening. We just got to a get a field and play.”
