A person waiting for the Red Line at South Station reportedly fell onto the tracks and was struck by an oncoming train at 5:15 yesterday evening, according to preliminary investigations performed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.
The South Station T station was closed off to the public for almost four hours as local firefighters worked to extricate the body from under the train, the MBTA said. A shuttle service was used to transport T riders between South Station and the surrounding T stops at the Summer Street entrance, alleviating some of the congestion caused by commuters trying to get home.
At South Station, guards coordinating the shuttle and blocking the entrance to the T station only told inquiring passengers that the station was closed because there was a “medical emergency.” This caused people to generate stories on their own, including rumors that someone jumped in front of the train, said shuttle passenger Mika Young of Dorchester.
Young took the shuttle to and from South Station and said the service was easier than she expected.
“I was quite amazed, actually. … There wasn’t much of a difference,” she said.
The victim has not yet been identified.
