At the Kells, there’s no such thing as a free brunch … or good eggs

For the morning after St. Patrick’s day, The Kells, located at 161 Brighton Ave., about a five or six minute walk past where Commonwealth Ave. turns, was clean and the waiters seemed pleasant.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see too much of the waiters. Once seated and allowed to hit the breakfast buffet, we had to seek out a waitress to order orange juice and later to get the check.

There is no breakfast menu as all of the food is buffet. But the buffet has a large selection if food including bagels, home fries, corned beef, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, omeletts and French Toast. There is also a table with fruit, cheesecake and eclairs. While the bacon was extremely crisp and tasty, and the home fries were fantastic, the eggs were a bit on the soggy side.

The buffet was refilled with some frequency, but not quite frequently enough. The omelette chef seemed to be taking forever, and although his omelets looked big and well made we opted not to order any.

The fruit and cakes were all fresh, including ripe watermelon, pineapple, creamy eclairs and cheesecake. The whole setup of the buffet is spacious enough so fairly big crowds had room to move around, and the restaurant as a whole was equally roomy.

All in all, the food wasn’t bad, but overly pricey. For two people to get a buffet plate and an orange juice, the total came to $31.92 plus tip, so those looking for an inexpensive meal should look elsewhere. The food was nice, but for that kind of money, a larger range of slightly better food should be expected. Also, if you prefer to order food rather than get it buffet style, you’re out of luck.

Still, despite its shortcomings, the eating experience at Kell’s was adequate. The atmosphere was pleasant, and the waiters, when we finally found one, were very nice. Still better food, for less money and better service would have made the experience much better.
