Passengers escape serious injury in collision

Four individuals escaped serious injury yesterday following a two-car crash at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Essex Street at about 12:30 p.m.

The accident occurred when two Wheelock College students travelling west on Commonwealth Avenue tried to make a left turn onto Essex Street and their Volvo was struck by a van headed eastbound, according to officer Adam Mazzola of the Boston Police Department.

Deputy Superintendent Paramedic Kevin Shea said the injuries sustained were “non-life-threatening.”

Two unidentified victims were sent to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital; the other two were sent to the Brigham and Women’s Medical Center. At least two of the victims were placed on backboards after being removed from their car, and at least one victim had already been released from the hospital within hours of the accident.

Traffic was backed up on Essex Street — which traverses the Boston University Bridge — for about 30 minutes due to the crash.
