Students praise online registration as fast, easy

Because of Boston University’s latest technological innovation, College of Communication sophomore Adam Jupiter’s life just got a whole lot easier.

“I love it! It’s so easy,” Jupiter said of WebReg, the newest way to register for classes offered by the University.

Touted as the fastest, most convenient way to line up a fall schedule, COM and College of Engineering students can arrange their schedule, track class availability and register with one mouse click. Through the Student Link on the BU website, students may avoid typing access codes and maneuvering through the usual layers of complicated telephone numbers associated with the older TelReg system.

Jupiter was prepared to sit down at 5 p.m. on his designated registration day, phone in hand, to slowly enter each class into the system and wait, listening to the automated voice to learn the results of his attempt. Instead, a friend alerted him before 5 and he reconsidered his options. “Tony said, ‘You’ve got to do it online,” he said.

What Jupiter found was an upgraded Student Link, allowing students to choose the option to plan their schedule online, complete with graphs and up-to-the-minute availability updates. The link saves the student’s charted schedule, so when the time comes to register, students need just click on the appropriate link and all their classes are registered simultaneously.

“It’s so easy. All you do is set it up, and there’s a planner through the registration page. It keeps you updated for what’s available, you press ‘go,’ it let’s you know what your schedule is, and you’re done,” he said.

Jupiter especially appreciated the advantage of using a single username and password as opposed to the combination of access codes and passwords required through the TelReg system. “You can do all your classes at once rather than sitting and waiting,” he said. “I was done in 20 seconds.”

However, some pitfalls still remain in the way of WebReg becoming a University-wide convenience. The system is currently only available to COM and ENG students. Furthermore, many students were not aware of the online option.

“I didn’t think of it as an option. They didn’t explain it clearly enough,” said College of Communication junior Angela Law, noting that none of her roommates used the system to register, either.

Jupiter insists that WebReg is the preferred method of registration. “It saves time. It’s just the easiest and simplest way to register,” he said. “That’s how I’m going to do it from now on.”
