Arts coverage not performed enough

I have noticed with increasing chagrin the neglect of arts coverage in this paper. This spring, the Boston University Opera Institute’s unspeakably fine production of “The Marriage of Figaro,” our Theatre Arts Division’s excellent performances of “The Cripple of Inishmaan” and “Six Characters in Search of an Author” and innumerable recitals by both student and visiting musicians have all come and gone without the Free Press taking any notice.

The paper has however noticed the introduction of advertising into Mad Magazine, an erstwhile boy band, erectile enzyme experiments, and even the most demented visiting speakers. The Muse devotes most of its space to reviewing films and television programs that even the reviewers can’t stand. Additionally, the Muse’s events calendar editor appears to be bored to tears, being forced to fill his space by punning band names.

And yet there are numerous plays, concerts, recitals, exhibits and other such events taking place on our campus most days of the week that are being left out of your beacon of truth. While it is possible that the persons tasked with publicizing these events are not contacting you, an attempt to call around to see what goes on in our midst would be very helpful, and rather journalistic too. A few events that merit coverage in the near future are the Huntington Theatre Company’s current production of “Amphitryon,” continuing through April 8; the BU Opera Institute’s production of “Beatrice and Benedict,” running April 19-22. Please do have a look at them.
