I enjoy reading The Daily Free Press almost every day, most especially the Opinion columns. Rarely a day goes by where I can’t find some reference to the School of Management in at least one of the columns.
Although I am an SMG sophomore, I still find these comments amusing. I am not writing out of anger with these comments, but rather frustration. I spend over 20 hours a week in SMG, so I do see the abundance of Gucci, Prada and Armani. I have on many occasions questioned the need to wear sunglasses in the middle of winter, but style is a personal choice. In fact, my personal choice is to shop at (gasp!) J. Crew, Gap and even Old Navy.
I am not in the minority at SMG either. In all my classes, there are a few people totally decked out in clothes that I can’t even bear to think about how much they cost, a few people in sweats with “rolled right out of bed” hair, and the rest fall somewhere in between. Yes, I own a long-black peacoat, black pants and the latest cell phone from Nokia. HELLO! Half of the female population at Boston University can say the same.
I really have no problem with using stereotypes to enhance a column or to make a joke. I, like many SMG students, will join in the laughter. I do however want to remind those at the University who haven’t had the opportunity to meet a student representative of the majority of SMGers that we aren’t any different from the majority of BU students.
