Don’t disparage the rednecks

Sometimes the liberalism of Boston University bothers me. Disadvantaging the majority for the benefit of the minority just doesn’t seem to make much sense, but then, I’m a proud “redneck” who grew up in the backwoods of Maine — which brings me to my main point.

Are any of you liberal students ever bothered by the unfair discrimination, prejudice and, dare I say it, bigotry you show toward “rednecks?” You know, those white country folk who are misrepresented and insulted on a daily basis by students and our very own Free Press. I hear students laughing at Mississippi every day, for — gasp — not being progressive and changing a flag! I admire Mississippi for speaking its mind and keeping a vital part of its heritage alive. Besides, it’s ONLY A FLAG.

I’m aware you’ve branded my backwoods brethren bigots and racists, although “all” of them most certainly aren’t. But are you aware that you open-minded and loving students now hate them with as much venom as you claim they’ve got?

Now I’m not writing this letter because I’m angry. Nor am I writing it because I’m argumentative, or to arouse your righteous wrath. I just want to make you aware that your “cruel majority” is quickly turning into an impotent, detested minority and none of you seem to care.

If you are really striving for an equal world full of brotherly love, I challenge you to recognize and learn more about America’s other minority: the redneck.
